Pack for a Purpose
We are proud members of the Pack for A Purpose organization, an initiative that allows travelers like yourself to make a long and lasting impact to those in need at your travel destination. Saving a few kilos of space in your suitcase and bringing needed supplies will create a priceless difference in many lives.
Guests traveling to La Selva and participating in the program will be supporting the Kichwa Pilchi Community school. The local people of this area, the Kichwa, live along the Napo River and have trails interconnecting their homes up and down along the river banks. The Pilchi Community is found in the middle. This is where they meet for family celebrations, holidays, school, and other events.
The children who attend the school are between the ages of 5 and 13. In order to attend some must walk up to an hour from their homes to the school. Others who live across the river must go by canoe, taking half an hour or more.
Once they've finished at the Pilchi Community school they then begin attending the high school in Coca, where the national airport is. This port town San Francisco del Coca, the complete name of the town, is about 2 hours upriver. This is a trip students must make every day in the morning and afternoon, Monday through Friday. Talk about dedication to their studies!
Although these native Amazonian families have decided to live as their ancestors did generations before them and continue passing down their traditions and living in the forest, they still want to offer their children a decent education. They believe that the more educated they are, the better they will be able to protect and conserve their homes and the Amazon Rainforest in general.
If you would like to participate as a traveler to La Selva we have a list of items on our pack for a purpose page online and further below. When booking your trip to La Selva mention your involvement in the program to our sales representative.
Upon arrival to La Selva's main lodge you can tell the hotel supervisor you've brought items for the program and they will accept the donation.
